It’s great to have preconceptions challenged and ultimately defeated. A record by The Necks drummer Anthony Buck was sure to be more minimal, beautiful, slowly evolving pieces of music. Cool. I love The Necks thing, I’ll chill with this over Saturday arvo beers in the backyard. Wrong!
This is wild rock/noise. Big riffs, ripping drums, harsh shouted vocals. Recalling band like Shellac, Fugazi and stoner kings Sleep more than anything remotely jazz.
Anthony will not be pigeonholed, he’s showing us something else; his post punk underground roots.
But is it any good? Hell yeah.
This is big exciting music. It punched me in the face from the opening chord and didn’t let it up for its duration. By album’s end I was air guitaring with my two year old son, Rolando… he was supposed to be getting ready for his nap…no way was that happening…he’d been bitten by the bug too.
Who’s got time for bed with adrenaline inducing action like this buzzing between our ears? Diamond cutter sharp, it’s no loose thing, rather, it’s about power, aggression and ultimately, through it’s clever use of repetition, some sort of freedom.
And the fact that he’s approaching it from another angle, another discipline, it sounds wonderfully fresh.
Anthony is one hell of a drummer, pushing, teasing and exploding all over the place.
The drum rolls made my eyes water; super tight in a brilliant way. The guitars, all played by Mr Buck are fat (and wank) free. Building and interweaving and then fuzzing out and then twisting into new shapes. And always with cool interesting rhythms. The bass, played by the only other musician on the album Dave Symes, is the perfect backbone to all this noise; a great low anchor.
Without a dull moment on it, this is one of the great rock records of the year. Who’d have thunk it? What a joyful surprise.
He even pulls off a Dylan cover in this style…sad sack acoustic troubadours take note: this is how you do Dylan! Let it rock! Explore it in a unique fashion, make it something else.
He’s touring in the new year. See you down the front.
